Getting the name of a class in Python
Just like object constructors, classes can be defined as user-defined prototypes for creating objects. class
Classes can be created using the keyword .
A class is a data structure that can contain both data members and member methods.
This tutorial will discuss the methods to get the class name in python.
Get the type or class of an object/instance
using type()
the function and__name__
type()
is a predefined function that can be used to find the type or class of an object.
__name__
is a special built-in variable which basically gives the name of the current module in which it is used. Since python does not have main()
a function like other languages like C/C++, Java and other similar languages, so, if it is a source file executed as the main program, the interpreter sets __main__
to __name__
. Also, when a file is imported from any other module, __name__
it is set to the name of that module.
type()
Functions and __name__
variables are used to get the type or class of an object in the following code.
class num:
def __init__(self, num):
self.num = num
x = num(1)
print(type(x).__name__)
Output:
num
In Python 3, all created classes are new style classes whereas in Python 2, old style classes may co-exist with new style classes. New style classes are the classes inherited from object instances whereas old style classes or classic classes are the base classes that existed before python 2.1.
The above method can only be used with new-style classes.
Get the type or class of an object/instance
using the __class__
and properties__name__
__class__
Attributes can also be used to find the class or type of an object. It basically refers to the class in which the object was created.
__name__
Can also __class__
be used with to get the class of an object.
The following code uses __class__
and __name__
to get the class of an object.
class num:
def __init__(self, num):
self.num = num
x = num(1)
print(x.__class__)
print(x.__class__.__name__)
Output:
<class '__main__.num'>
num
