If not statement in Python
The statement in Python if
checks a specific condition and executes a block of code if the condition is true.
if not
The does the opposite of if
the statement. It tests if a condition is false and then executes some statements.
Using if not
the statement can improve the readability of the code, and False
some statements can be executed directly for the conditions that return .
The following code will help explain its use.
x = 5
if not x > 10:
print("False")
Output:
False
Since x > 10
, False
the code is executed.
Similar to if
the statement, it can have multiple conditions, and we can also use it with else
the keyword to create if-else
blocks.
if not
The statement can also be used to check whether a data set, such as a list, dictionary, is empty. In Python, if a variable or object is 0 or empty, then it is considered to be false. See the following example.
lst = []
if not lst:
print("Empty")
Output:
Empty
Similarly, its usage can also be extended to other conditions like checking if something is not present in a set. For example, we can use the if not
with in
keyword to execute some statements if an element is not present in a list as shown below.
lst = [1, 2, 3, 5, 6]
if not 4 in lst:
print("All Okay")
else:
print("Not Okay")
Output:
All Okay
