Multi-line Lambda functions in Python
We will introduce functions in Python lambda
and how to use it across multiple lines in our Python applications.
lambda
Functions
in Python
We usually use def
the keyword to define our functions in python, but python provides an anonymous function called lambda
the function. This function has no name.
Lambda
A function is a small and limited function written in one line. Lambda
A function can have multiple parameters, just like a normal function with one expression.
In python, we use lambda
the function to construct anonymous functions. An anonymous function consists of three main parts.
-
lambda
Keywords. - parameter.
- Function body.
We can lambda
use any number of arguments in a function, but the body must contain only one expression. lambda
Functions are written on a single line and can be called immediately.
lambda
The syntax of the function is as follows.
# python
lambda x, y: x + y
The syntax shows that x
and y
are the parameters and x + y
is lambda
the expression in the function. Now, let's discuss how to call it immediately.
Code:
def addVar(x, y):
return x + y
print(addVar(2, 3))
Output:

lambda
A function can be written in just one line of code, and it can certainly have multiple variables, but lambda
a function contains only one expression.
If you are looking for a function that can be written on multiple lines, you can use def
the keyword instead lambda
.
Let us see an example where we will create a new function consisting of multiple lines as shown below.
Code:
def checkVal(x):
if x < 5:
print("X is smaller than 5")
if x > 5:
print("X is greater than 5")
checkVal(4)
Output:
From the above code example, if we want a function that can be written in one expression, we can use lambda
the function, but if we need to write a function in multiple expressions and lines we need to use def
instead lambda
.
