Multi-line Lambda functions in Python

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/05/07 Views:

We will introduce functions in Python lambdaand how to use it across multiple lines in our Python applications.

lambdaFunctions in Python

We usually use defthe keyword to define our functions in python, but python provides an anonymous function called lambdathe function. This function has no name.

LambdaA function is a small and limited function written in one line. LambdaA function can have multiple parameters, just like a normal function with one expression.

In python, we use lambdathe function to construct anonymous functions. An anonymous function consists of three main parts.

  1. lambdaKeywords.
  2. parameter.
  3. Function body.

We can lambdause any number of arguments in a function, but the body must contain only one expression. lambdaFunctions are written on a single line and can be called immediately.

lambdaThe syntax of the function is as follows.

# python
lambda x, y: x + y

The syntax shows that xand yare the parameters and x + yis lambdathe expression in the function. Now, let's discuss how to call it immediately.

Code:

def addVar(x, y):
    return x + y

print(addVar(2, 3))

Output:

Multi-line lambdafunctions in Python

lambdaA function can be written in just one line of code, and it can certainly have multiple variables, but lambdaa function contains only one expression.

If you are looking for a function that can be written on multiple lines, you can use defthe keyword instead lambda.

Let us see an example where we will create a new function consisting of multiple lines as shown below.

Code:

def checkVal(x):
    if x < 5:
        print("X is smaller than 5")
    if x > 5:
        print("X is greater than 5")

checkVal(4)

Output:

def function in python example result

From the above code example, if we want a function that can be written in one expression, we can use lambdathe function, but if we need to write a function in multiple expressions and lines we need to use definstead lambda.
