Sorting a collection in Python
A set is an unordered and unindexed collection with no duplicate elements. Sets are one of the four built-in data types available in Python and are written using curly braces.
Given that sets are unordered, it is not possible to sort the values of a set. However, if we print a set, it appears in a sorted fashion.
Please refer to the code below.
s = {5, 2, 7, 1, 8}
print(s)
Output:
{1, 2, 5, 7, 8}
If we wish, we can use different functions to sort a collection and return a list. These are discussed below.
sorted()
Sorting a collection
using the function in Python
sorted()
The function is a built-in function in Python that returns a sorted sequence (list, tuple, string) or a sorted collection (set, dictionary) in the form of a list. sorted()
The function has no effect on the original iterable sequence as it provides a new sorted output.
For example,
s = {5, 2, 7, 1, 8}
print(sorted(s))
Output:
[1, 2, 5, 7, 8]
Note that sorted()
the function returns a list and not a set. We could use set()
the function again to convert this list into a set. However, this is redundant because sets are unordered.
sort()
Sorting a collection
in Python using the
sort()
The method is used to sort the elements given in the list in ascending or descending order. It is a destructive process, i.e., sorted()
unlike the function, sort()
the method sorts the elements in the original list itself.
We cannot use this function on sets. However, we can wrap a set in a list and it will sort them.
For example,
s = [{5, 2, 7, 1, 8}]
s.sort()
print(s)
Output:
[{1, 2, 5, 7, 8}]
Note that sort()
the function also returns the final output in a list. We can take a similar approach with the sorted() function as well.
On the other hand, we can use list()
the function to convert the collection to a list and sort it using this method.
Please refer to the code below.
s = {5, 2, 7, 1, 8}
l = list(s)
l.sort()
print(l)
Output:
[1, 2, 5, 7, 8]
