Different ways to add files to stash via Git

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/04/21 Views:

While the command git addis probably the most commonly used command for adding files to the stash, other flags may come in handy depending on the situation. This article takes a deep dive into git addthe flags you can use with the command.

git addFlags in Git version 2.x

git addThe different modes are shown in the following table.

Order New File Modify the file Deleted files
git add -A <optional_path>
git add .
git add --ignore-removal .
git add -u

The first two commands, git add -Aand , git add .are similar in functionality, as both are used to stage all files ( new, modified, deleted). Furthermore, the commands git add -Aare equivalent to git add -all. The only difference between the two commands is git add .that adds all files in the current folder, whereas if you run git add -Awithout specifying a path, it will add all files to the staging, regardless of the directory you run the command from.

The third flag works completely differently, as it only adds new and modified files to the staging, whereas the last command git add -uonly stages modified and deleted files. git add -uThe long form of is git add --update.
