Remove Git init
In this article, we will learn how to undo git init
the effects of a command in Git.
git init
command creates a new empty Git repository.
When used with an existing project directory that has not yet been versioned, git init
the command converts the current directory into a Git repository.
Sometimes, we may want to remove a project directory from the Git version control system.
We will now illustrate this with an example.
Undo for a directory in Gitgit init
When setting up a repository in Git, we use git init
the command.
git init
The command creates a directory called (a hidden directory) in the project directory .git
. This directory is used to store all the objects and references used by Git. These .git
objects and references created and stored in the folder are used by Git for the history of the project directory.
.git
The directory exists to separate normal directories from Git repositories.
Below we can see .git
the typical contents of a Git repository's folder.
$ ls .git
branches config FETCH_HEAD HEAD index logs ORIG_HEAD
COMMIT_EDITMSG description gitk.cache hooks info objects refs
As mentioned earlier, git init
the command creates .git
a directory and its subdirectories. These subdirectories are the metadata for the repository.
HEAD
The file is created by git init
the command, which points to the currently checked out commit.
Therefore, undoing git init
the effects of the command means removing the project directory from Git's version control system; basically, the project directory will no longer be a Git repository.
.git
To do this, we need to delete the folder
from our project directory .
$ rm -rf .git
After you delete .git
the folder, the project folder is no longer tracked by the Git version control system.
Any changes made so far will remain and will not be affected in any way.
Of course, since the project directory is no longer a Git repository, we now cannot fetch new changes pushed to the remote repository.
