Batch checks whether the specified environment variable contains a substring

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/04/21 Views:

This article discusses how to use the Batch command to test whether an environment variable contains a specific substring. We will introduce two batch scripts that can be used in the above scenario.

Checks whether the specified environment variable contains a substring

Suppose we have an environment variable defined as Foo and want to check if it contains the substring BAR. How do we do that?

In this case, we can use the trusted findstr command as shown below.

echo.%Foo%|findstr /C:"BAR" >nul 2>&1 && echo Found || echo Not found.

You could branch instead of echoing, but if you need a lot of statements based on this, the following is simpler.

echo.%Foo%|findstr /C:"BAR" >nul 2>&1
if not errorlevel 1 (
   echo Found
) else (
    echo Not found.
)

The above script will return Found if the variable contains the specified substring. If the variable does not contain the substring, it will return Not found.

In short, we have introduced two scripts that can be used to test whether an environment variable contains a specific substring.
