Extract a specific commit from a Git repository
Sometimes you may want to pull specific commits from a remote repository to your local repository, and there are several ways to do that. Below, you can find several ways to extract specific commits from a Git repository.
Use git fetch to get the changes and then merge using the commit hash
Using it, you can fetch changes from the remote repository and then find the commit hash to merge into your local codebase. You can follow these steps:
-
Get the latest changes in the repo
git fetch remote <branch_name>
git fetch
<branch_name>
The command gets changes from the specified . -
View the Git log to grab the merge commit hash
The above command lists all the commits such as commit hash, commit author, commit date, and commit message. You can usegit log
--oneline
the - flaggit log --oneline
to get all the commits and their respective hashes in one line. -
Merge the desired commits using the commit hash
Finally, the commit you wish to merge can begit merge <commit_hash
git merge
done with the command using the commit hash.
Using the above method, all commits up to the merge commit are also merged. However, to merge changes from a single commit, you can use git cherry-pick as:
git cherry-pick <commit_hash>
Pull the code of a specific commit into a new branch
If you want to extract the changes from a commit and checkout to a new branch, you can do that with a single command.
$ git checkout -b <new_branch_name> <commit_hash>
git log
We can retrieve the commit hash
using the command mentioned above .
Using git pull with commit hashes
This step is similar to the one mentioned in the first method until step 2. Once you have done the above, step 2 (after running git fetch
and git log
to see the commit hashes).
$ git pull origin <commit_hash>
Using the above command, you can extract all the changes from the hash of the mentioned commit.
Here, and git pull
are combined .git fetch
git merge
