View Git configuration

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/04/04 Views:

Git is a well-known and commonly used version control system in the world.

When using Git, developers can access their repositories locally, which allows many developers to work on the same project in a large team.

Therefore, each team member has a different way of working. That's why each team member can have a different local Git configuration.

Initially, when we start using this version control system, we need to do some setup, which only needs to be done once. For this situation, Git has a git configtool called , which means you can customize your Git environment according to your personal preferences.

This tool will help us set configuration options to control the entire Git installation, i.e., how pulling or pushing data to a repository looks and works. This tool will help organize our email editor and generally allow us to alias git commands for future use.

git configThis article will demonstrate how to view the configuration in Git using the command. We will look at the different git configcommands we need to launch.

Let's explore the different types of Git configurations.

System Git Configuration File

Git proposes four standard possibilities for storing data. The fifth one is a portable oscilloscope that can be used on Windows operating systems.

The list mentioned below is arranged in descending order based on their particularity:

  1. Working Tree
  2. local
  3. Global
  4. system
  5. Portability

How to view Git configuration

The three ways to view Git 配置are as follows. We will explore these commands one by one with examples.

  1. git configOrder
  2. git config --listOrder
  3. View our Git configuration file

Use git configthe command

git configThe command is the most straightforward function we use to set up Git configuration, whether in the global project or in a local project.

Here is the git config command, which displays the username of the user working in the Git environment:

git config user.name

In this case it gives the username as output:

John

Use git config --listthe command

git config --listThe command will generate the entire Git configuration properties mainly for the scoped Git files.

This git configcommand can be executed as follows:

git config --list

This command provides the result of all relevant information related to the name, email, and tool specific details saved in the configuration file:

user.name=John
user.email= John@gmail.com
merge.tool=vimdiff

View Git configuration file

We can also view the git configuration file through the HOME directory on Unix systems Username, as follows:

~/.gitconfig

The files on the current test system are as follows:

[user]
        name = Peter Johnson
        email = [omitted]
[merge]
        tool = vimdiff

This is our global Git username. We can also use different usernames for different projects in our local environment if we like.
