Global Git configuration file location

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/04/04 Views:

The most famous distributed version control system is Git, which stands for Global Information Tracker. This VCS is used to keep the code and files that developers can access later, both remotely and locally.

Each developer can access their repository locally to save the code and once the work is completed, push it to the remote repository.

In this guide, we will discuss Git configuration and where the global Git configuration files are stored.

Global Git Configuration

Once the repository is set up, we can use the command line git configto edit and change configuration settings using the command.

This command is used to change the configuration options in our Git installation. It also helps us set and edit our username, email, and any aliases we want to use with Git commands.

The command consists of three parts; local, global, and system. These three levels git configare used with the command and can be used accordingly in the command line.

We can manage our development environment in many ways. However, the ideal way to customize settings for username, email, remote branches, and preferred text editor is through a global .gitconfig.

This is a very beneficial and powerful command. It can be found in the local explorer file.

Global Git configuration file location

To see all the features that are configured globally in Git, we will use the command git configand add switch-list. By adding another switch –show-origin , we can also see .gitconfigthe location of the global .

We can say that it clearly states where those .gitconfigfiles are located.

global@git:~/$ git config --global --list --show-origin

The output of this command looks something like this:

file:/home/gme/.gitconfig user.email=test@test.com

So, once the above command runs successfully, all the details related to username, email, remote branch, and text editor will be displayed on the command line.
