Storing usernames and passwords in Git

Author:JIYIK Last Updated:2025/04/04 Views:

This article will discuss how to store credentials in Git. We will configure Git to call our credentials so that we can automatically access our remote repositories.

Storing usernames and passwords in Git

You may have noticed that every time you want to use the Git GUI or run commands such as pushand over HTTP(S) pull, authentication will require you to enter your username and password. Fortunately, you can save your credentials on Git and access your repositories instantly, as we will cover shortly.

We will first set up the username and password when cloning the repository to make things easier.

You have to set the username and password in the remote repository URL in the command line. Check the example below.

$ git clone https://<USERNAME>:<PASSWORD>@github.com/path/to/repo.git

To run the preceding command, replace <USERNAME>and <PASSWORD>with your credentials.

Git stores your credentials in .git/configthe file.

You can use the following command to update the URL for those who cloned its repository without configuring credentials.

$ git remote set-url origin https://<USERNAME>:<PASSWORD>@github.com/path/to/repo.git

To save your credentials on Git, run the following command.

$ git config credential.helper store

The command above will save your credentials in your local repository. You can add --globalthe -p option to save them globally.

$ git config --global credential.helper store

When prompted, run git pullthe command and enter your username and password. Git will save your credentials and you can automatically access your remote repositories from this point on.

There is one small problem with this approach. Git will save your password as plain text in .git-credentialsthe file.

This is unsafe, especially if your system is not encrypted. To fix this, you can use the following command.

git config --global credential.helper manager

Windows Credential Manager saves your credentials in your system's secure storage.

Run git pullthe command and enter your credentials when prompted. Git does not save your password in plain text.
