Converting a PIL image to a NumPy array
This tutorial will discuss methods to convert a PIL image to a 3-dimensional NumPy array in Python.
numpy.array()
Convert a PIL image to a NumPy array in Python using the
PIL is used to perform various operations on images in Python. The Pillow library does not come pre-installed with Python programming language. Therefore, we have to install it first. Given below is the command to install the Pillow library.
pip install Pillow
If you want to convert an image read by the PIL library into a NumPy array, you can use numpy.array()
the function. The numpy.array() function creates and initializes a numpy array. numpy.array()
The function converts a PIL image into a 3-dimensional array. See the following code example.
import numpy as np
from PIL import Image
img = Image.open("NASA.jpg")
imgArray = np.array(img)
print(imgArray.shape)
Output:
(90, 240, 3)
In the code above, we convert numpy.array()
a PIL image img
to a three-dimensional NumPy array using the function. We read the image in the variable imgArray
using the function in Python . Then, we convert to a NumPy array using the function in Python . Finally, we print the shape of using the function.Image.open()
img

numpy.asarray()
Convert a PIL image to a NumPy array in Python using the
We can also use numpy.asarray()
the numpy.asarray() function to achieve the same goal as in the previous example. The numpy.asarray() function also creates and initializes a numpy array. By passing the image to numpy.asarray()
the numpy.asarray() function, we can convert a PIL image to a numPy array. See the following code example.
import numpy as np
from PIL import Image
img = Image.open("NASA.jpg")
imgArray = np.asarray(img)
print(imgArray.shape)
Output:
(90, 240, 3)
In the code above, we converted numpy.array()
the PIL image img
to a three-dimensional NumPy array using the function in Python imgArray
. We Image.open()
loaded the img variable into the img variable using the function in Python. Then, we converted the image to a NumPy array using numpy.asarray()
the function in Python . Finally, we printed the shape of using the function.img

print()
