This article will discuss how to overwrite local changes
using the command in Git .
git pull
Overwrite local changes in Git
using command
git pull
The command gets files from the remote and merges them into the local repository. We first need to understand git pull
how the command overwrites files.
git pull
The command is a combination of two commands:
-
git fetch
Order -
git merge origin/Branch
Order
When we run git pull
the command, Git will fetch the changes from the repository you cloned origin
and merge them with the current branch in your local repository.
Git will successfully run the command only if you have no uncommitted changes git pull
. If your index has some uncommitted changes, you may get errors.
Deleting uncommitted local changes using Git
If you don't need uncommitted changes in the index, use git reset
the command in the context below.
git fetch
git reset --hard HEAD
git merge origin/$CURRENT_BRANCH
git reset --hard HEAD
Uncommitted changes will be discarded to allow git merge
the command to run.
For those who don't want to specify a branch to fetch from, Git has a shortcut using the -f branch @{u}
parameter on the command line.
git fetch
git reset --hard HEAD
git merge '@{u}'
Keeping uncommitted local changes with Git
For those who don't want to get rid of uncommitted changes, you can commit or stash them. Stashing your commits keeps them away from your index and you can restore them later.
The changes are still in Git, but not visible. Run the command before pulling from the repository git stash
.
You can git stash pop
restore stashed changes using the reschedule command. Note that git stash pop
the reschedule command will apply your changes and remove the stash from your list.
git fetch
git stash
git merge '@{u}'
git stash pop
If the above doesn't work, we always have git pull --force
the command.
You need to specify the source branch and the sink branch using this command. It is git fetch --force
very similar to .
