Git exits the commit message editor
This article outlines the steps to exit the commit message editor in Git. When you merge or make a commit in Git, the console prompts you to provide a commit message that briefly describes the new commit.
Git opens your default text editor, where you should provide your commit message. Navigating in a text editor can be confusing, especially if you are new to Git version control.
By the end of this article, you will have the necessary knowledge to navigate in a Git text editor.
Exit the commit message editor in Git
For the sake of a simpler context, we will try to commit some changes for Git to prompt us using a text editor.
First, we’ll press i to insert a message to our commit. When we’re done, press Esc to exit.
Press :+w+qto write and quickly ( :wq). Press Enter to complete the process. It is that simple.
Git also states that it will abort the merge or commit if you fail to provide a commit message. If you want to exit without merging, leave the message blank and use the keyboard combination above to exit.
请注意, the above combination is only applicable for vim editor. If you are using nano editor, use the combination shown below.
^Just the Ctrl key. So, to exit the Nano editor, you should use Ctrl+X.
When making a commit in Git, use -mthe flag to include a commit message as shown below.
$ git commit -m "Commit Message"
This will save you the pain of navigating in a text editor.
