In this article, we will learn how to copy text from vim editor to another machine. We will copy the content to the clipboard.
Use yank
the command or register vim
to copy and paste in . However, copying to another application (such as a browser) requires additional actions.
I will show you how to copy text to the system clipboard using different methods.
Installation in LinuxgVIM
Vim
By default, you do not have access to the system clipboard; however, gaining this functionality is very simple.
One method compiles a version that supports clipboard access Vim
, while the other installs gvim
.
Installing .clipboard gvim
allows you to copy and paste standard terminal scripts vim
to your clipboard. In other words, it allows you to copy to a specific register associated with the clipboard on your system.
It is essentially a register where you can copy items and have them instantly saved to the system clipboard. Install it using the following command gVIM
or vim-gtk
:
$ sudo apt-get install vim-gtk
If you need to move data from Vim to another program, use the key combination +y
to copy the text and to +x
cut it from the original document.
Then click the following three buttons in sequence:
"
+
x or y
In both cases, the cut or copied text is transferred to the clipboard and can be Ctrl+v
pasted outside using the standard command in Linux vim
.
Local clipboard to Vim in Linux
The reverse process is just as easy. String +gP
can be used to transfer text copied from the clipboard.
Let's look at each component of a string:
- The letter
P
represents the one before the current positionpaste
. - The letter
g
key moves the cursor to the end of the copied text.
gP
The output of the command is as follows:
- Places the cursor after the pasted text and pastes before the current position.
- If you don't
g
, the cursor will be positioned on the last letter of the pasted text, wasting time when you try to advance it one character.
