Get the current commit in Git
Git is a popular and globally used version control software. It is easy to use and provides a smooth platform for developers to work on their projects in large teams.
In Git, commits are considered the basic framework part of the Git project timeline. Commits are called basic snapshots or milestones of a Git project.
Each commit in Git has its own unique identifier; a long string of characters follows them, which is called a Commit Hash . Commit hashes are also called Git commit references or SHAs.
Each commit also contains comments by the developer or any team member to remember the high-level details or tasks to be done in that task in the future.
This blog post explains the process of getting the current commit hash using the following Git command. Git hashes are unique and assigned to each commit done by the developer to remember the identity for future use.
Retrieve the current commit hash in Git
There are several ways to get the hash of the current commit. We will see them one by one in the following areas.
git log
To get information about the latest commit, we will use the command git log -1
, and we will also use the flag --format so that we can get the commit hash of the latest commit as well. The command is shown below.
$ git log -1 --format=format:"%H"
%H
Used for the commit hash, which is generated for the identity of that commit when pushing from a local branch to a remote branch.
git rev-parse
git rev-parse
We can also find the latest commit hash
by using command . This is a useful subcommand of Git but not widely used by every team developer on a daily basis.
git rev-parse
is another plumbing command that is important for management. It returns the commit hash of the most recent commit.
$ git rev-parse HEAD
If we only want to retrieve the first 8 digits of the commit hash, we would git rev-parse
add a filter using the command as follows cut -c 1-8
:
$ git rev-parse HEAD | cut -c 1-8
Additionally, we can use the command git rev-parse
add filter --short to get a unique short SHA.
$ git rev-parse --short
Sometimes, we want to convert references (branches and tags) into commit hashes. For this, we can use the two commands mentioned below.
$ git show-ref
# 或者
$ git for-each-ref
