Reset files to the same state as the master branch in Git

Suppose masterthere is an important file in the branch that should not be edited, but unfortunately it has devbeen edited and committed several times in the branch. Now you want to discard all the changes made to the file and change its status to be masterthe same as in the branch. There is a simple way to achieve this easily.

The following syntax will revert the selected files to be identical to the files in the master branch.

git checkout master -- <filename>

Here, --you tell git that --the text that follows should be interpreted as a filename, and not a branch name or anything else.

Once the command runs, the difference between the contents in the new reset file will be cached. To see what changes were reset, you can run the following command to view the difference,

git diff --cached

Reset a file to a specific commit in Git

Another situation may arise like you want to reset a particular file to a specific commit. To do this, you can see the changes between two versions of a file as shown below.

git diff <commit_hash> <filename>

Here, commit_hashis the commit whose changes you want to compare with the current version of the file. Now that you are sure of the changes you want to reset, you can reset a specific file to the version in the commit hash as follows,

git reset <commit_hash> <filename>

Another way to achieve the same task is,

git checkout <commit_hash> <filename>

This also helps achieve the same result.
